Job Purpose: The Line Design Engineer works in the Civil/Structural Group designing power distribution and transmission for electric utility clients and private developers for overhead line design. The position involves detailed design of new lines, renovations, reconductoring, and upgrades for MV voltage projects up to 34.5kV and transmission voltage projects to 345kV.  The company is growing and trending towards transmission line design as a supplement.

Duties include assisting in the preparation of engineering deliverables for electric utility power distribution and transmission projects such as:

  • Initial routing, layout, and design of single phase and three phase overhead and underground distribution line design including site plan feasibility and joint-use field review and design.
  • Perform structure analysis and design of pole, framed and guyed structures, and foundations.
  • Perform analysis and design of conductors for sag, ground clearances, spacing, galloping, etc.
  • Equipment and material selection and specification and preparation of cost estimates and bills of material
  • Distribution and transmission line design with wood and steel pole support structures and appurtenances, and cable tension design calculations and clearance checks.
  • Electrical one-line drawings, detailed physical layouts, and construction drawings
  • Evaluate system performance and recommend engineering solutions to address system risks, reliability, load growth, and to minimize operating expenses.
  • Bid and construction contract documents
  • Assessment of existing distribution and transmission line structures
  • Sales support
  • Observation and inspection
  • Application of basic engineering principles, specifications, policies, and procedures in the field.

Under supervision, the Line Design Engineer:

  • Conducts assigned project work and coordinates with team members to ensure compliance with project schedules.
  • Makes design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications for distribution lines.
  • Performs calculations using engineering formulas and skills involved in the resolution of design problems, including performing field investigation or observation and detailed quality control and quality assurance (QC/QA) review of design calculations.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Civil or Structural Engineering required; GPA of at least 3.0 preferred. ABET accredited program or equivalent required.
  • PE licensed
  • 3+ years of engineering experience.
  • Proficiency in PLS-CADD overhead line design software.
  • Proven experience in Microsoft Software Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point).
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD.
  • Authorization to work permanently in the US.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; fluent in the English language.
  • Ability to work closely with other engineering and design team members to coordinate overall design package and requirements.


  • PE License required.  Multiple state licenses preferred.
  • Knowledge of distribution and transmission line design voltages.
  • Experience in the energy industry or with an engineering consulting firm as an employee, coop student, summer student, or intern.
  • Experience in the routing and design of distribution and transmission lines at a minimum.
  • Experience developing design criteria and specifications for line design and procurement of materials, project cost estimating, and quality control reviews; and construction standards and methods.
  • Knowledge of Engineering Standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI.
  • Knowledge of and modeling experience for Power Line Systems software suite (i.e., PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE) required.
  • Knowledge of Rural Utilities Service (RUS) design guide.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
