    The purpose of this position is to perform skilled technical installation, programming, testing, and maintenance of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Assigned projects will include SCADA and communications for utility and industrial/commercial clients. Systems to be analyzed will include conventional and renewable generation facilities, substations, and transmission and distribution systems. Technical disciplines include the following three areas: Networking and Communications: design and configure network and communication paths for Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), Human Machine Interface (HMIs), PLC’s and other SCADA system equipment; specify and design communication networks including data security and availability; develop basic specifications for fiber optic, microwave, power line carrier, or radio communication paths; travel to project sites to troubleshoot and commission network and communication systems. 

    Responsibilities

     

    • Develop and implement logic and control schemes for remote and local operation of power system equipment;
    • Develop programs on various platforms for implementation of these schemes;
    • Travel to project sites to test and commission the control schemes.
    • Applicable Logic and Control Platforms: SEL RTAC, Orion, Cooper SMP, GE-D20.
    • Data Acquisition: Prepare points lists of all data to be transferred between control centers and controlled apparatus, assign and program data addressing and routing information, develop Human Machine Interface (HMI) screens, travel to project sites to test and commission data transfer schemes. Applicable Software: Wonderware, Clearview, AcSELerator RTAC, Visual Basic, OSIPI, Python scripting etc.
    • Installs, repairs, calibrates, programs and maintains a variety of electrical equipment.
    • Troubleshoots problems with field instrumentation and PLC hardware including communications and input and output modules/cards.
    • Oversees repairs and maintenance by contractors and vendors; trains plant staff on the operation of existing, modified and new systems.
    • Controls programming of computerized process control equipment, PLCs and SCADA system; downloads programs to PLCs.
    • Reads, writes, understands and performs modifications to existing PLC code; may be required to write new code.
    • Maintains backup files for all PLC and SCADA software.
    • Creates and updates electrical and electronics schematics.
    • Installs, repairs and calibrates equipment in permit-required confined spaces.
    • Serves as technical liaison between utility personnel, IT staff, other personnel, outside engineers, consultants, vendors and technical and service support representatives.
    • Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking and replacing fluid, greasing equipment, building parts, replacing parts and cleaning equipment, shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

     

    • Knowledge of computerized instrumentation systems, transformers, switches, control panels, and electronic components of control systems.
    • Knowledge of standard terms, practices and procedures used with SCADA and PLC networks.
    • Ability to collect, coordinate, classify and analyze data.
    • Ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive, advisory and design data and information to make technical decisions.
    • Ability to identify problems, recommend solutions, and use initiative to implement them.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customer employees and other departments.
    • Ability to communicate effectively; includes ability to speak and write clearly and to interact with members of the department, other customer departments and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve problems.


    Qualifications Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering or computer science.
    • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience that includes programming.
    • Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
